Bayan University's mission, its vision, the values beneath them, and the decisions those commitments are used to make.
Bayan University publishes its mission and its vision so that a reader can hold the university to them, and so that everyone who works here shares one answer to the question of what this place is for.
Mission
To teach a small number of subjects properly, to a standard that holds up outside the room the degree was awarded in, and to send graduates into the working life of the Kurdistan Region able to do real work.
In practice that means teaching in the colleges Bayan actually has rather than expanding into subjects it cannot staff well; building curricula around what a graduate will be asked to do; and assessing capability rather than recall.
Vision
A university in Erbil that a student chooses on the strength of its teaching, that an employer trusts without first asking which programme the graduate came from, and that institutions elsewhere can work with as an equal.
The values underneath
- Teaching first. Everything else in the institution exists to make the hour in the classroom better.
- Rules before cases. Regulations are written, published and then applied — the same way, to everyone, including when the outcome is inconvenient.
- Honesty about what we know. Staff and students are expected to show their evidence and to name the limits of it.
- Open doors. A student should be able to reach a teacher, a head of department and, in the end, the university itself.
- Rooted here. The region's language, law, economy and public life are the context this university teaches in, not a backdrop to it.
- Care with the truth. The university does not claim what it cannot show, about itself or about anyone else.
What the mission rules out
A commitment that excludes nothing commits to nothing. This one rules out:
- Growth into subjects the university cannot teach to standard
- Claims about the institution that the record would not support
- Any decision about a student taken on a basis other than their work
Where the mission is actually used
It is not a wall poster. It is the test applied when a programme is designed or revised, when academic staff are recruited through Vacancies, when research priorities are set under Research, and when a proposed collaboration is weighed under International. If a proposal cannot be justified against the mission, it does not proceed.
