Scholarly Publishing

The university's peer-reviewed journal: what it covers, who may submit to it, and how a manuscript is reviewed.

The Bayan University Journal is the university's own scholarly publication. It exists so that work done here has somewhere to appear that is edited to an academic standard, and so that researchers elsewhere writing in the fields Bayan teaches have somewhere to send it.

Scope

The journal follows the disciplines of the university's three colleges:

  • Engineering and science, computing, and English language and linguistics
  • Law and international relations
  • Accounting, business administration, and banking and finance

Work sitting between two of those — the law of a technology, the economics of a legal regime, language and how it is taught — is read on the same terms as work inside one. Studies of the Kurdistan Region and of Iraq are of particular interest, because they are the material a university here is placed to gather and the literature has less of them than it should.

Who may submit

  • Academic staff of Bayan, writing alone or with colleagues elsewhere
  • Researchers at other institutions, in the Region and outside it
  • A student author, where a supervising member of academic staff is named on the paper and stands behind it

Nothing is published because of who wrote it, and nothing is refused on that ground either.

How review works

  1. The editorial office checks the manuscript against the author guidelines — format, references, anonymisation, and the declarations every author signs
  2. The editor reads it for scope, and returns anything outside the journal's subjects at once rather than holding it
  3. It goes to independent reviewers who are not told the author's identity, and whose identities the author is not told
  4. The editor decides on the reports: accept, revise, revise and resubmit, or decline
  5. A revised manuscript goes back to the reviewers where the revisions were substantial
  6. Accepted work is copy-edited with the author, then scheduled

Review takes as long as it takes to find readers competent in the subject. The editorial office will say where your manuscript stands if you ask.

What every author declares

  • That the work is original, is not published elsewhere and is not under consideration elsewhere
  • Who contributed what, and that every named author agrees to be named
  • Any funding, employment or relationship a reader would want to know about
  • Permission for any figure, table or extended quotation owned by someone else

Sending a manuscript

Ask the editorial office for the current author guidelines before you write, not after — the guidelines carry the length, language, citation style and file requirements. Write through Contact. The university's other research activity is described under Research.
