University Structure

How Bayan is organised — the governing bodies, the colleges and their departments, and the administrative offices that support both.

Bayan is organised in three layers: a governing layer that sets direction and holds the university to it, an academic layer that teaches and examines, and an administrative layer that keeps both running.

Governance

  • The Board of Trustees carries responsibility for the institution as a whole — purpose, finances, integrity — and appoints the President.
  • The President leads the university day to day and is accountable to the Board for it.
  • The University Council is the senior collective body for academic matters. Regulations, programme changes and academic decisions with university-wide effect are taken there rather than by any single office.

Colleges and departments

Teaching sits in colleges, and within each college in departments. A department owns its programme: the curriculum, the teaching staff, the assessment and the students on it.

  • College of Engineering and Science — Department of Computer Science, Department of English Language
  • College of Law and International Relations — Department of Law, Department of International Relations
  • College of Business and Economics — Department of Accounting, Department of Business Administration, Department of Banking & Finance

A college is led by a dean; a department by a head of department, who is the first point of contact for anything to do with the programme. What each department teaches is on its page under Programs.

Administration

Administrative work is organised by function rather than by college, so that a student on any programme deals with the same office for the same thing. Broadly, those functions are:

  • Admission and enrolment
  • Student records, registration and official documents
  • Student affairs and welfare
  • Finance and student accounts
  • Human resources
  • Library, and information technology
  • Quality assurance
  • Research support and external relations
  • Public relations, events and alumni

How a decision travels

  1. A proposal starts where the work is, usually in a department.
  2. The college examines it and, if it agrees, carries it upward.
  3. The University Council takes the academic decision.
  4. Where the decision commits the institution — a new department, a change of direction, money at scale — it goes to the Board.
  5. The responsible office implements it and publishes what students and staff need to know.

Where to ask

Anything about a course, a mark or a timetable belongs with the department first. Anything about a record, a document or a deadline belongs with the administration. If you are not sure which, send it through Contact and it will be routed.
